Finding. Your. Dress.

That’s why brides come to Ava Laurénne – to find their dress.  But which word of that phrase is most important?  It has to be “dress,” right?  After all, that’s the goal – to walk out knowing you found your perfect dress for your perfect day.  But wait, did you miss it?  What is the goal?  Go back and read that last sentence one more time.  What is it a bride wants to walk out knowing?  That she “found her perfect dress.”  There is no dress if there is no finding, so the most important aspect of “finding your dress” has to be the finding.  But what does this finding look like?  Does this just mean physically locating the style you believe you want to wear?  Most brides tend to think so, at the beginning.  This appears to be a situation where they must try on enough gowns to sort through all of the possible styles and silhouettes that could potentially look best to find that proverbial needle in the haystack – the dress.

Let’s think about this in relation to finding the right person.  We frequently meet brides who have known their fiancé since middle school, but they didn’t find them in the sense of knowing they were the one until after college.  Finding in this sense suggests much more than locating someone; it’s about the recognition of what this person means.

Why do we go on dates as part of deciding if we want a relationship to continue?  Is it the food?  The place?  Is it just the excitement of being out?  Clarity.  We want clarity.  Dinner out is about no distractions.  Oh, there can be creatively prepared food and an impressive atmosphere with an amazing view, but those things don’t distract us from clarity, they enhance it.  When we find ourselves in an environment we enjoy, our minds are free from all the natural concerns related to our surroundings and our ability to know what we feel is enhanced.  

So how does all of this apply to finding your dress?  Environment is important.  Not for its own sake, but for yours.  Deciding how you want to feel on the biggest day of your life is, by definition, an emotional experience.  Connecting with a dress emotionally takes effort, and distractions rob brides of the clarity they need to read their own emotions.  So finding your dress, like finding the right person, is to a large degree about knowing what it is you feel.

This is why some brides ask us if anyone else has ordered the dress they fell in love with – it’s personal.  It’s so reminiscent of finding the right person that it’s almost difficult to think about someone else having the same dress.  Just as it would be difficult to think of someone else being with their fiancé.  But isn’t that an exaggeration?  How could this be true that brides so deeply connect the emotions of their dress with the emotions they feel about their fiancé?  Consider that a bride’s dress constitutes a representation of herself.  A bride in her dress on her wedding day is the most important representation of herself to the most important person in her life.  Of course she will feel similar emotions toward the dress that she feels toward her future spouse.  This is much more complicated than merely trying to locate a dress with the right fabrics and silhouette. 

When a bride finds what she feels, she’ll know when she has found her dress.
